Founded in 1974 Wonderland has served as a one stop shop for the hippie, yuppie, gen x, and now the gen y paraphernalia enthusiast.
The oldest head shop on the East Coast, we are located in the historic Rittenhouse Square area of Center City Philadelphia. Any tourist can tell you that we are visited almost as much as some of Philadelphia's most historic landmarks as visitors and locals alike have climbed the wooden stairs into our shop for over 3 decades. Just like Alice down the rabbit hole, they ascend into a world where suddenly, you don't see things as you did before.
Wonderland's flagship location at 2037 at Walnut Street is where owner and operator Michael Katz first opened the doors to his very own "Wonderland", which was a 500 square foot store front with a selection of pipes and papers, stickers and incenses, beads and candles. Since then, the shop has expanded to cover over 5,000 feet of a smoker's paradise - resembling an oversized dorm room with beads separating the retail spaces, black light posters adorning the walls, and classic rock blaring from the speakers. It's not just a store, it's what we could all imagine the 60's feeling like, if we could just go back there for 30 minutes. Or what the 60's DID feel like to our shoppers that lived through the era. Be careful not to trip over a lava lamp when trying to find that perfect relic to remind you of high times.
Staying close to its hippie roots, Wonderland has hand selected product from local artisans from around the country. Whether it's a tied died t shirt or a bootleg tape – even the most finicky Phish fan or Grateful Dead Head can quench their psychedelic palate.
The knowledgeable staff has hands on experience with each piece of merchandise and has the demeanor that you would come to expect from a head shop counter. Everyone is cool. Take your time. Look around. Play with the toys. It's a lot to look at. We know. We've been doing this for almost 40 years and we still can't believe it!!!
We started our fan base in the seventies and let our customers know we were here through word of mouth and the support of a community. Shakedown Street to Wall Street, this community still exists, and now you can even like us on Facebook or follow us on twitter. No matter how the times change, Wonderland remains a state of mind, and there will always be a place for to step into our store and escape reality.
Enter Wonderland and like Alice, peering through the looking glass ... you realize things aren't always as they seem.
